Biscuits & Cookies, Edible Gifts, Recipes / 03.12.2018

I'm always in search of great edible gift ideas, especially around this time of year. If you've ever made a homemade gift for a loved one you'll know how appreciated it is! Since I had no biscotti recipes on my blog I thought this was a good place to start. Biscotti look beautiful when simply packaged in cellophane with a ribbon, or in a pretty glass jar. And who doesn't love a crisp biscotti with their tea or coffee? Traditionally biscotti are made with almonds or other nuts but  I wanted something a little different. I love the rich, spicy flavours...

I've been meaning to try my hand at a Salted Caramel recipe for some time. They are, in my opinion, one of the most addictively delicious sweets around! I recently attended the Saveur Blog Awards in Memphis and discovered the perfect locally-made Salted Caramel. With some restraint, I managed to not eat ALL of them so that I had some reference samples to bring back to South Africa and try to copy. In my research I found that there are 2 different ways to make these sweets - the first is by cooking all the ingredients at the same time until...

Sponsored Post If you haven't discovered pull-apart cupcake cakes yet, you are in for a treat! These "cakes" are actually made up of individual cupcakes. This makes them easy to portion, and less messy and wasteful than large cakes. Perfect for parties! Another benefit of using cupcakes is that you can make almost any shaped cake you desire by simply arranging the cupcakes in different ways. With Christmas around the corner (is it that time already?) I was inspired to make this festive Christmas Cupcake Wreath. It's made up of 24 cupcakes, so a fab dessert if you are feeding a...

If you're looking for an easy edible gift this festive season, look no further! This Cranberry and Pistachio Fudge uses only white chocolate and condensed milk as the base, plus there's no sugar thermometer required. So technically it's not real fudge (made with butter, sugar and cream) but I'm all for shortcuts at this very busy time of year! It's hard to believe something so delicious takes less than 10 minutes to prepare. The white chocolate makes the fudge extra creamy and sweet, then the cranberries add a lovely bit of tartness. Add to that the crunchy chunks of gingersnaps and...

If you have evered ordered Churros with Chocolate Sauce from a restaurant, you have likely experienced something delicious. But just wait until you taste the home-made version! Hot, crispy and fresh out of the fryer is the best way to enjoy these babies - preferably dipped in a rich chocolate sauce. For those who've never tried one, a Churro is a Spanish and Mexican dessert made by deep-frying a choux-pastry dough, then rolling the hot pastry in cinnamon and sugar. Quite similar to a doughnut but crispier, and with a slightly softer texture inside. Churros are best when served immediately after frying...

I can almost hear you asking "what on earth is a Wimbledon Cake?". I won't keep you in suspense any longer! The inspiration for this cake evolved from a beautiful bottle of Rosé bubbly that I had. It was crying out to be used it in a dessert recipe (obviously) and a light and airy cake seemed to suit the fizzy champers perfectly. Such an epicly flavoured cake deserved an equally grand filling, so I settled on a Swiss Meringue Buttercream (if you haven't tried SMB yet, do yourself a favour!). Then just to add a burst of freshness I...

Koeksisters are a well-known treat amongst South Africans, especially the sweet-toothed ones! For those who haven't had the pleasure of trying a Koeksister, they are delicious deep-fried twists of dough that are dunked in a thick syrup. They are similar to doughnuts, although most Koeksister recipes make use of baking powder and not yeast as a leavening agent. Traditionally Koeksisters are made with a lightly flavoured syrup, containing just a hint of lemon juice and cinnamon. And of course, loads of sugar. It's always risky making changes to a traditional recipe (especially one that's been around as long as this!), but...

Ever since I spotted one of these beautiful Ice Cream Drip Cakes on Pinterest, I've been looking for an excuse to make one. Finally, the perfect occasion - my twin niece and nephew had their 3rd birthday party and Auntie Astrid was given free rein in making them each a cake! (Not pictured here is the equally beautiful blue version.) It was a delight to see their little faces light up at the sight of the cake, and oh did we have fun trying to explain it wasn't actually ice cream in the cone! Please don't be intimidated about making this...

What makes a recipe "magic"? How about adding 7 ingredients to a baking tin, popping in the oven, and removing perfectly layered bars like this?* If you're impressed already, then just wait until you taste these Magic Bars. Oh. My. Word. I was actually quite taken aback by the deliciousness of them. Imagine a crunchy biscuit base, topped with a soft chocolate layer, chewy coconut and almonds and lastly a layer of crunchy golden granola. All these flavours and textures do a magic happy dance in your mouth, and before you know it you're reaching for another one.  At this point I expect...
