Food Scientist, Cape Town, SA

About me

I’m Astrid, I’m a Food Scientist turned food blogger. I left the lab behind and turned my kitchen into my new culinary playground! I’ve always had a passion for food. I have many happy memories of baking and experimenting in the kitchen. More than just trying various recipes. I had a curiosity for how things worked. Which is probably what led me to study Food Science!

After completing my degree at the University of Pretoria I went on to work in a flavour laboratory, developing beverage formulations.

In 2013, after spending several months traveling with my then fiancé’ (now husband) I was diagnosed with a chronic illness. I decided to leave the commercial food industry and take some time off, but I missed the creative aspects of developing products.

I started blogging about my baking adventures and have never looked back!

Studying Food Science and spending years in the lab has given me confidence to experiment with my baking. When I come across a challenging recipe or technique, I don’t feel intimidated – I can’t wait to try it! Not everything works the first time but that’s when my problem- solving science brain kicks in – I love trying to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it.

Having worked in the flavour industry for 3 years I also have a good understanding of how to work with and balance flavours.
